Tried and Trusted
Sadly, a girl cannot live by shopping alone. Unless, like my friend Heidi, you have a husband who takes care of everything, then, sooner or later you have deal with the stuff of life. Stuff that breaks down. Like cars, computers, dishwashers… in fact anything that’s indispensable, ingeniously designed to falter the minute the warranty is up and impossible to fix by anyone without a van.
So, where does a girl (not called Heidi) turn?
| Hopefully, that’s where I come in. Being someone who gets around, I felt it was time to share my experiences and reveal the names on my ‘Can’t do without’ list: People who can do the job and won’t rip you off. They’re not necessarily cheap, as I’ve found to my cost, but they are Tried and Trusted. |

Let’s start with cars.
Now, I love my car and am very grateful that it takes me where I need to go and looks shiny and has dark windows. It’s garages I don’t like. They see me coming. I know nothing about what’s under my bonnet and they know it. (I did once choose a garage because I fancied the boss – but that was a big mistake.
Romance and tyres don’t mix and we’re talking large amounts money, which could well be spent on shoes.)So, let me tell you about the only garage I do trust. It’s no coincidence that the person in charge is a woman.

The lovely Beryl at Bob Farnon’s on Longridge Trading estate is petite and quietly spoken, yet clearly sharp and knowledgeable and says she can fit tyres as well as any of her 5 technicians.
It’s a friendly, family run organisation - Bob and Beryl have been married for 45 years and trading together in the motor industry since 1972. So they know a thing or two. When Bob retired, Beryl took the driving seat and now son, John, is gearing up to take over. I go knowing that I’m getting an honest job well done and not dreading the moment when the computer spits out the bill.
